The history of LEGO Atlantis (2010-2011)

The theme launched in January 2010 as a big homegrown adventure line built around deep-sea exploration. A dive team in yellow-and-black submersibles collected successive Atlantis keys that opened the way to the lost city. The villains were guardians of the deep: a shark warrior, a squid warrior, a manta ray and other human-sea-creature hybrids. The first year culminated in the Portal of Atlantis (8078), and the 2011 second wave took the heroes into the city itself with City of Atlantis (7985), complete with the golden Atlantis king on his throne. After two years LEGO ended production.

Why Atlantis is a cult favourite today

Underwater themes are one of LEGO's oldest traditions, going back to Aquazone in the 90s, and Atlantis was the last big instalment with a real storyline. The sea-warrior masks and glow-in-the-dark keys appeared nowhere else, and the coherent two-year story ending in a golden city gives the collection a natural beginning and end. Large sets like the Portal of Atlantis (8078) and City of Atlantis (7985) are keenly hunted sealed today, and single guardian minifigures can cost as much as a whole small set once did.

Frequently asked questions: LEGO Atlantis

Will LEGO bring back the Atlantis theme?
LEGO has not announced a return of Atlantis or any other big story-driven underwater theme. Deep-sea motifs occasionally resurface in City, but the separate world of Atlantis has stayed closed since 2011. Sets are mostly available on the secondary market, with occasional leftover stock in stores.
How much are LEGO Atlantis sets worth today?
The big sealed sets are worth the most: the Portal of Atlantis (8078) and City of Atlantis (7985) fetch multiples of their RRP on the secondary market. Smaller vehicles are cheaper, but a complete run of the theme keeps appreciating. If tracked stores have active offers, we show them in the price section above.
What made LEGO Atlantis sets special?
The signature feature was the Atlantis keys, collected across sets and fitting gates and vaults, plus two-sided play: diver heroes versus guardians in animal masks. Add the large cockpit canopies, glow-in-the-dark elements and the distinctive yellow-black-green livery of the vehicles.
