The history of Bionicle (2001-2010 and 2015-2016)
Bionicle debuted in 2001, when LEGO was in serious financial trouble, and quickly became one of the pillars that pulled the company out of the crisis. Instead of classic bricks the theme offered buildable action figures: six Toa warriors with Kanohi masks of power defended the island of Mata Nui against the dark Makuta. The story unfolded through comics, novels, games and films, creating LEGO's first fully-fledged universe years before Ninjago. Successive generations of Toa, Bohrok and Piraka carried the theme for a decade until it ended in 2010. In 2015 LEGO revived Bionicle in a refreshed form, but the reboot was closed after two years.
Why Bionicle is a legend today
For the generation born in the 90s, Bionicle is synonymous with childhood, and its fan community remains one of the most active in the LEGO world despite the years since production ended. Canisters from the first waves, rare Kanohi masks and limited editions reach collector prices today, and sealed sets from 2001-2003 are among the most hunted items on the secondary market. Will LEGO bring back Bionicle?
LEGO has closed Bionicle twice: the original theme in 2010 and the reboot in 2016. Despite enormous fan engagement, the company has not announced a third run; only small nods have appeared, such as elements in anniversary sets. Collectors are left with the secondary market, where Bionicle is among the most actively traded retro themes.
How much are LEGO Bionicle sets worth today?
The range is huge: popular canisters from later years are relatively cheap, but rare masks, limited sets and sealed boxes from the first waves reach prices in the thousands of złoty.
